Rousseau's idea of "general will" calls the people of a country to put aside their conflicting idividual interests in favour of the best interests of the country as a whole. The best example of this is how Canada has remained united as a nation and has come together in times of trouble, despite our many differing (and often conflicting) cultural or individual interests. A more specific example is how Natives, French- and Anglo-Canadians fought against the American invading armies during the War of 1812. Or another example is the building of the Great Canadian Railroad which linked this vast country and many cultures together. During the world wars people put aside their individual interests and contributed to the war effort in any way they could: enlisting, working in factories, growing \/ rationing food, etc. They even outlawed alcohol which used grain in order that the soldiers would have more bread! Lastly, since we are still a unified nation, I think that it is fair to say that the idea of putting the best interests of the nation before the individual interests of the person is prominent in our Canadian society.","dateCreated":"1300044562","smartDate":"Mar 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"KyleOfCanada","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/KyleOfCanada","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1299207539\/KyleOfCanada-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"35635736","dateCreated":"1299767007","smartDate":"Mar 10, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Kips","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Kips","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/hall-period1-world-history.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/35635736"},"dateDigested":1532763684,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"trial","description":"test test","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
